Hiking in Auvergne

The ideal hiking day always starts the same way in Auvergne: early in the morning, the sunrise already warms you with its gentle heat, you have a good breakfast, and you prepare… the **hiking in Auvergne** begins. The route is decided, or not… don’t forget your water bottle, warm clothes, snacks, GPS, and sunscreen if needed.
Enjoy your stay at our camping in Auvergne to discover the most beautiful summits of Auvergne.

Hiking in Auvergne from Neuvéglise in Cantal.

Three hiking departures in Auvergne are available from the campsite:

  • The first one takes you just outside the village of Lanau and introduces you to the towpath of the La Truyère river in its only natural section. This 3.5 km route, of low difficulty, allows you to see deer drinking from the river early in the morning…
  • The second takes you to the opposite side of our mountain for a discovery of the Auvergne forest, featuring a 400-year-old oak and a 600-year-old plane tree. You will then reach the Aubrac Plateau, before descending back to the Lanau lake. Count about three hours of walking. The little extra: having a picnic by the lake.
  • The third, which starts in the village of Lanau and climbs up to the village of Gros, is called the “schoolchildren’s path” (yes, even on vacation). It offers beautiful views of the Truyère river and the Lanau Dam. Duration: 1 to 2.5 hours.

At the reception, you will find various hiking guides and maps of Auvergne available for you to borrow. You can consult them on-site and take a copy of the map that interests you. The two large books cover most of the hiking trails in the area. You can browse them on the terrace of the bar while having a coffee in the sun before heading out for a hike.

Other hikes in Auvergne

The tourist offices of the Pays de Saint Flour, the French hiking federation, and the departmental committee have gathered all the hiking trails, marked paths, long-distance routes, and walking itineraries in the area. We invite you to consult their website: https://www.pays-saint-flour.fr/sejour/sports-loisirs/randonnee-pedestre/. Around Puy Mary, you will also find a multitude of hiking trails and paths to explore the mountains of Auvergne and the Monts du Cantal. There are so many that you can even plan a week of hiking and spend each day walking and discovering new mountainous areas if you wish. Note that we are close to the discovery trail in the Brezons valley passing through Plomb du Cantal. To prepare for this discovery, here is more information: https://www.mongr.fr/sentier/12/gr-400-le-tour-du-volcan-cantalien. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore the various routes, following the markers for breathtaking views.
